Dr. Jaishankar’s Message on X
In a post on X, Dr. Jaishankar wrote: “Warmest greetings to FM Wadephul, the Government and people of Federal Republic of Germany, on the occasion of German National Unity Day. Value the sustained momentum in our ties, as we complete 25 years of our Strategic Partnership.”
The message was addressed to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, the German government, and its people, reflecting India’s emphasis on the historic milestone in bilateral ties.
High-Level Meetings in September
Ministers Jaishankar and Wadephul last met in September 2025 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York during the G4 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Along with Brazil and Japan, the group assessed the global state of play and pressed for urgent reforms in the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative of today’s multipolar world.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The German Foreign Minister also visited India earlier in September, where both sides agreed to introduce gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to encourage student exchanges, and to establish a new bilateral consultation mechanism focused on the Indo-Pacific.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that Minister Jaishankar and Minister Wadephul reviewed the “multifaceted” Strategic Partnership during delegation-level talks. The two ministers expressed satisfaction with progress in areas including trade and investment, defence and security, technology, science and innovation, green and sustainable development, education, and people-to-people ties.
India also conveyed its appreciation for Germany’s solidarity and consistent support in the fight against terrorism, the MEA added.
Spirit of Unity and Shared Values
Marking the significance of October 3, Dr. Jaishankar noted that German Unity Day symbolizes hope, reconciliation, and the courage to overcome divisions. The reunification of Germany in 1990, he said, serves as a reminder that “unity is built on respect and dialogue” and that peace and democracy remain values “worth protecting.”
German Unity Day is celebrated each year to commemorate the reunification of East and West Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
