India and Germany have intensified discussions on expanding cooperation in smart manufacturing, electric mobility and advanced industrial technologies, amid growing focus on sustainable industrial transformation and digital manufacturing ecosystems in both countries.

The discussions took place during a meeting held between officials of the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and a German delegation led by Ernst Stöckl-Pukall, Head of BMWE at the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.

The German delegation also included representatives from the German Embassy in New Delhi, VDMA India and Siemens. The delegation met Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, along with senior officials from the ministry.

Focus on Manufacturing-X and Dataspaces

According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the discussions centred on the introduction of International Manufacturing-X (IMX), opportunities surrounding Dataspaces in India’s manufacturing sector, and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the automotive industry, electric mobility and decarbonisation initiatives.

“The discussions focused on the introduction of International Manufacturing-X (IMX), opportunities around Dataspaces in the Indian manufacturing sector, and strengthening bilateral collaboration in the automotive industry, electric mobility and decarbonisation initiatives,” the ministry stated on 22 May.

Both sides also explored opportunities in technology partnerships, skill development, investment collaboration and joint ventures aimed at supporting the transition towards sustainable and digitally connected manufacturing ecosystems.

India Accelerating Industrial Digitalisation

The meeting comes at a time when India is accelerating efforts to strengthen advanced manufacturing capabilities, localise clean mobility technologies and expand industrial digitalisation under flagship initiatives such as Make in India and Industry 4.0 adoption.

India has been increasingly focusing on developing smart factories, industrial automation systems, EV supply chains and low-carbon manufacturing technologies as part of its broader strategy to enhance global competitiveness and reduce industrial emissions.

The growing emphasis on digital manufacturing and industrial data-sharing platforms is also expected to play a key role in improving efficiency, interoperability and resilience across industrial value chains.

Germany Remains Key Technology Partner

Germany continues to remain one of India’s major technology and industrial partners across sectors including automotive manufacturing, engineering, industrial automation and sustainable mobility.

Industry experts believe the latest engagement could further deepen India-Germany cooperation in areas such as EV ecosystem development, smart manufacturing infrastructure, industrial software solutions and green industrial technologies.

The discussions also reflect the broader strategic convergence between India and Germany in promoting sustainable industrial growth, clean mobility and digitally integrated manufacturing systems amid the global transition towards greener and more resilient economies.
