India and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening development cooperation, with senior officials from both sides holding high-level consultations in New Delhi focused on climate action, sustainable infrastructure, green growth and long-term development financing.
The discussions took place on June 13 during a bilateral meeting between NITI Aayog and a delegation from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), underscoring the growing importance of the India-Germany development partnership in advancing shared sustainability and economic objectives.
Focus on Net-Zero Transition and Sustainable Development
The meeting was chaired by Sanjeet Singh, Programme Director, Economics and Finance, NITI Aayog, while the German delegation was led by Barbara Schäfer, Head of Division for Policy Issues – Asia and South Asia at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
According to NITI Aayog, the consultations covered a broad range of priority areas, including India’s net-zero transition, renewable energy deployment, circular economy initiatives, sustainable infrastructure development through public-private partnerships (PPPs), agricultural transformation, water resource management and the participation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the green economy.
The discussions reflected the increasing convergence between India’s development priorities and Germany’s long-standing support for climate action, sustainable economic growth and development financing.
Climate Finance and Infrastructure Investment in Focus
A key element of the dialogue centred on aligning bilateral financing mechanisms with sustainable development goals and long-term economic commitments.
Officials explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure financing and discussed ways to enhance global investor confidence in India’s climate policies and regulatory frameworks.
The two sides also examined how development finance can support large-scale investments required for clean energy deployment, sustainable infrastructure and climate-resilient growth.
Leveraging Complementary Strengths
During the meeting, both delegations highlighted the complementary strengths that underpin the India-Germany partnership.
Germany’s technical expertise and development-finance capabilities were seen as aligning closely with India’s policy ambitions, institutional capacity and large-scale implementation capabilities.
The discussions further emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation in areas such as environmental sustainability, clean energy, water management and agricultural reforms, while supporting the participation of SMEs in emerging green economic opportunities.
Commitment to Deepen India-Germany Development Partnership
Sharing details of the engagement on social media, NITI Aayog said it had welcomed a high-level German delegation for a focused bilateral consultation aimed at advancing the India-Germany Development Partnership.
“NITI Aayog welcomed a high-level German delegation for a focused bilateral consultation to advance the India–Germany Development Partnership,” the institution said.
The policy think tank noted that discussions covered “India’s Net Zero transition, renewable energy, circular economy, sustainable infrastructure through PPPs, agricultural transformation, water resource management, SME participation in the green economy, and alignment of bilateral financing with GSDP commitments.”
According to NITI Aayog, “both sides highlighted the complementarity between Germany’s technical expertise and development finance capabilities and India’s policy ambition and institutional scale.”
The organisation added that the discussions explored ways of “strengthening infrastructure financing cooperation and enhancing global investor confidence in India’s climate and regulatory frameworks.”
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment from both countries to further deepen the India-Germany development partnership through continued dialogue, collaboration and coordinated action across priority sectors, reinforcing the broader strategic relationship between New Delhi and Berlin in the areas of sustainability, economic development and climate resilience.
