India and Germany continue to deepen their strategic engagement as Indian Ambassador to Germany Ajit Gupte held a series of high-level meetings with members of the German Bundestag, focusing on parliamentary exchanges, economic cooperation, defence ties and opportunities emerging from the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The discussions come amid growing momentum in bilateral relations during the landmark year marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany.

Parliamentary Exchanges and State-Level Cooperation in Focus

On 10 July 2026, Ambassador Gupte met Dirk Wiese, Member of the Bundestag and Vice Chairman of the India-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group, to discuss ways to further strengthen the broad-based India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

According to the Embassy of India in Berlin, the two sides explored avenues for enhancing parliamentary engagement and expanding cooperation between Indian states and Germany’s federal states, known as Länder.

The Embassy stated on social media platform X: “Ambassador Ajit Gupte met Mr Dirk Wiese, Member of the Bundestag and Vice Chairman of the India-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group on 10 July 2026. They discussed strengthening the multifaceted India-Germany Strategic Partnership, facilitating Parliamentary exchanges and enhancing cooperation between Indian States and German Landers.”

The meeting reflects increasing efforts by both countries to build stronger institutional and regional linkages beyond federal-level engagement.

India-EU FTA Opportunities Highlighted in Talks with Metin Hakverdi

A day earlier, on 9 July 2026, Ambassador Gupte met Metin Hakverdi, Member of the Bundestag and Germany’s Transatlantic Coordinator.

The discussions centred on leveraging new opportunities created by the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, while also reviewing progress in defence cooperation, security collaboration and broader regional and global developments.

The Embassy noted: “Ambassador Ajit Gupte met Bundestag Member and Transatlantic Coordinator Metin Hakverdi on 9 July 2026. Discussions focused on deepening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, utilising opportunities from the India-EU FTA, growing defence & security cooperation and global and regional issues.”

The reference to the India-EU trade agreement underscores the growing importance both countries attach to economic integration and supply-chain cooperation as Europe and India seek closer commercial ties.

Bilateral Ties Receive Boost at G7 Summit Meeting

The recent parliamentary engagements follow high-level political discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June 2026.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed progress across a range of bilateral initiatives and expressed satisfaction over the renewed momentum in relations following Chancellor Merz’s visit to India and the successful conclusion of India-EU FTA negotiations earlier this year.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in key sectors including:

  • Trade and investment
  • Defence and security
  • Green and sustainable development
  • Technology and innovation
  • Education and research
  • Skilled mobility and people-to-people exchanges

The meeting marked the second interaction between Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz in 2026, highlighting the increasing frequency of high-level engagement between the two countries.

Defence and Mobility Cooperation Advance

The two leaders also welcomed important developments in bilateral cooperation, including the signing of the India-Germany Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, which is expected to provide a framework for expanding defence-industrial collaboration between the two countries.

Another significant milestone was the operationalisation of a transit visa waiver for Indian nationals transiting through Germany, a move expected to facilitate travel and strengthen people-to-people connectivity.

Looking ahead, Chancellor Merz invited Prime Minister Modi to attend the 8th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC), scheduled to take place in Germany later in 2026.

75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

As India and Germany commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, both sides are seeking to broaden cooperation beyond traditional trade and political engagement. Recent discussions indicate a growing emphasis on parliamentary diplomacy, state-level partnerships, defence cooperation, technology collaboration and leveraging the opportunities arising from the India-EU FTA.

The latest meetings in Berlin signal continued efforts by both governments to translate the strategic partnership into deeper institutional, economic and security cooperation at a time of evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics.
