In a move that could reshape the pathway for Indian students seeking undergraduate education in Germany, Cologne-based CBS International Business School and education consultancy YES Germany have launched Prep4University, an accredited Studienkolleg preparatory programme that will be delivered in India for the first time. The initiative aims to address one of the most persistent barriers faced by Indian students applying to German universities—the academic eligibility gap between India’s 12-year school system and Germany’s requirement for 13 years of pre-university education.
The programme, formally launched in New Delhi, allows eligible Indian students to complete a significant portion of their academic foundation studies and German language preparation in India before moving to Germany for the final stage of the qualification process. The initiative marks a notable development in Indo-German educational cooperation at a time when Germany is witnessing a steady rise in the number of Indian students choosing it as a higher education destination.
Addressing a Key Challenge for Indian Students
For many Indian students aspiring to pursue undergraduate studies in Germany, the requirement of an additional year of academic qualification has traditionally necessitated enrolment in a Studienkolleg—a preparatory programme that culminates in the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), the qualifying examination for admission to German universities.
Under the new Prep4University model, students can undertake their initial foundation studies and intensive German language training in Delhi before progressing to CBS International Business School in Cologne for the final Studienkolleg semester and the FSP examination.
The programme follows an English-track format and spans two semesters. It offers specialised T-Course and W-Course pathways, with admissions scheduled in February and August each year. Students securing at least 70 per cent marks in Class XII and an IELTS score of 7 are eligible to apply. Organisers say the programme will feature smaller class sizes and personalised academic support throughout the preparation period.
‘Direct Route’ to German Universities
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Dr. Christoph Willers, Managing Director and Vice President (Business & Administration) at CBS International Business School, said the programme had been designed to bridge the eligibility gap that many Indian applicants encounter.
“We aim to bridge the eligibility gap for Indian students aspiring to study in Germany. This dual-pathway program offers a seamless transition from foundational academic and language training in Delhi (Semester 1) to the final Studienkolleg and FSP exam at CBS Köln (Semester 2)—guaranteeing a direct route to top German public universities or CBS degrees,” said Prof. Dr. Christoph Willers.
CBS International Business School was represented at the launch by Managing Director Philipp Gülke, Prof. Dr. Christoph Willers, and Prof. Dr. Laxmi Remer, Vice President for International Affairs & Diversity and Professor of Finance. Representing YES Germany were founder and director Dr.-Ing. Gagan Syal, CEO (Sales & Marketing) Dr. Latika Chaudhary, and CEO (Operations & Support Functions) Karuna Syal.
Reducing Costs and Simplifying the Visa Process
Beyond academic preparation, the programme has been positioned as a means of reducing the financial burden associated with studying abroad.
Under German visa regulations, international students are generally required to maintain blocked accounts to demonstrate sufficient financial resources for living expenses. By completing the first six months of preparation in India, students may significantly reduce the amount required for these expenses during the initial phase of their studies in Germany.
The partnership will also provide assistance with Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certification and German student visa procedures, which have become critical steps for Indian students applying to German institutions.
Growing Demand for German Higher Education
Highlighting the rationale behind the initiative, Dr.-Ing. Gagan Syal, Founder and Director of YES Germany, said the programme seeks to simplify the journey for Indian students and their families.
“As well trusted consultants, we understand anxieties families face. This launch also simplifies the entire ecosystem of study in Germany, ensuring that Indian students in Germany Studienkolleg are no longer overburdened by foreign entrance exams. Whether it is undergraduate pathways or navigating modern prospects like study in Germany for masters, this initiative sets a new gold standard,” said Dr.-Ing. Gagan Syal.
Founded more than two decades ago, YES Germany operates through 24 offices across India and maintains an international office in Dubai. The consultancy focuses exclusively on German higher education and has established partnerships with a number of German universities. According to the organisation, it has assisted thousands of Indian students and reports a visa success rate of 99 per cent.
Strengthening Indo-German Education Links
The launch comes amid growing educational ties between India and Germany. Germany has emerged as one of the preferred destinations for Indian students, driven by internationally recognised degrees, comparatively affordable tuition fees at public universities, and increasing demand for skilled professionals across sectors such as engineering, information technology and advanced manufacturing.
Education observers say the introduction of an accredited Studienkolleg pathway within India could make German higher education more accessible and predictable for prospective students. By enabling students to complete part of their preparatory studies at home before transitioning to Germany, the programme may provide a more structured route into the German university system while further strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries.
