Indian marine engineering company Buoyancy Consultants and Germany-based Neptun Ship Design GmbH have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to collaborate on the design and engineering of specialised vessels.
The LoI was signed during the India Business Roundtable at SMM Hamburg 2026, the international maritime trade fair held in Hamburg from September 1–4.
The agreement brings together Goa-headquartered Buoyancy Consultants’ engineering and execution capabilities with Neptun Ship Design’s experience in ship design and marine engineering.
Collaboration to cover multiple vessel categories
Under the proposed collaboration, the two companies will explore projects involving container vessels, passenger ships, research and scientific vessels, and other specialised maritime assets.
The companies intend to work on opportunities in India as well as international markets. The partnership is expected to facilitate access to established vessel-design solutions, promote technical knowledge-sharing and support the engineering of complex shipbuilding projects.
No specific vessel order, project value, construction schedule or delivery commitment was announced as part of the LoI.
German design experience and Indian engineering capabilities
Headquartered in Rostock, Neptun Ship Design provides ship-design, engineering and consultancy services across vessel categories including container ships, bulk carriers, research vessels, river cruise vessels and yachts.
Buoyancy Consultants provides naval architecture, marine engineering and design services for ships and offshore projects. Its work covers areas ranging from concept and basic design to production support, vessel conversions and retrofits.
Through the LoI, Neptun Ship Design is seeking to expand its engagement with the Indian and South Asian maritime markets. Buoyancy Consultants, meanwhile, is looking to strengthen its access to German and wider European maritime opportunities.
Paul Brzesina, Managing Director of Neptun Ship Design, said the collaboration would combine the German company’s international ship-design experience with India’s engineering capabilities. He also identified India’s shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure plans as areas offering opportunities for long-term cooperation.
Prasad Sawant, Chief Executive Officer of Buoyancy Consultants, said the partnership would help bring international ship-design expertise closer to Indian shipyards while connecting global engineering experience with local execution capabilities.
A private-sector India–Germany maritime partnership
The agreement is a company-level Letter of Intent rather than a bilateral pact between the governments of India and Germany. It establishes a framework for the two companies to pursue potential projects, but does not by itself constitute a shipbuilding contract.
Nevertheless, the collaboration represents a new private-sector link in India–Germany industrial relations, connecting German maritime-design expertise with India’s growing shipbuilding and engineering ecosystem.
SMM Hamburg 2026 brought together approximately 50,000 trade visitors and 2,300 exhibitors from 66 countries, according to the event organisers. The Buoyancy–Neptun LoI was among the partnerships announced during the four-day maritime industry gathering.
