India’s expanding domestic market and manufacturing opportunities offer scope for greater German investment, FICCI Secretary General Anant Swarup said during Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Berlin.

Speaking to PTI on 21 October, Swarup highlighted India’s economic fundamentals, infrastructure development and policy environment as factors supporting its investment appeal. He said Germany’s technological expertise and precision engineering capabilities complement India’s scale, skilled workforce and cost competitiveness.

Manufacturing and technology in focus

Swarup identified advanced manufacturing, industrial automation, automotive technologies, specialty chemicals, renewable energy and electronics as promising areas for German companies.

He pointed to India’s relatively low per capita consumption across several industries, including automobiles, steel, chemicals, plastics, electronics and consumer durables. Rising incomes and urbanisation could create opportunities for companies to expand manufacturing capacity for both Indian and international markets, he said.

The opportunities outlined span sectors where German industrial capabilities could support India’s growing demand for technology, production capacity and specialised engineering.

Focus on investments and joint ventures

Swarup, who is accompanying Minister Goyal and an Indian business delegation, expressed hope that the visit would lead to partnerships, joint ventures and stronger trade opportunities.

He also highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation in engineering goods, automotive components, green technologies and Industry 4.0. The emphasis, he said, should be on translating commercial opportunities into concrete investments and stronger trade flows.

Scope for closer industrial cooperation

The remarks place manufacturing and technology partnerships at the centre of FICCI’s expectations for the visit. They outline potential areas of engagement rather than newly announced investment commitments.

For India–Germany business ties, the next step will be whether discussions during the visit develop into specific projects, production partnerships and joint ventures.
