India and Germany are bolstering their collaboration on green and sustainable development initiatives, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions and advancing scientific cooperation. German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann emphasized the strength of this partnership on Monday, 25 November, highlighting its significance during an event commemorating 50 years of Indo-German scientific cooperation.

Billion-Euro Green Projects Underway

Speaking to an Indian media outlet, Ambassador Ackermann described the partnership as “well-funded,” noting that more than a billion Euros are invested annually in collaborative projects across India. “There’s the partnership for green and sustainable development between India and Germany… Tonight we are talking about scientific cooperation, how Germany and India can scientifically cooperate and try to find new ways and means to invest in renewables to find new techniques and new ways of reducing carbon emissions,” he stated. He also expressed pride in celebrating five decades of scientific collaboration, calling it “a huge achievement.”

German Chancellor’s Engagement with India

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been actively engaging with India to strengthen bilateral ties. Scholz visited India three times since assuming office in 2021, including a state visit last month. During his interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leaders underlined the growing cooperation in defense, security, and sustainability.

After meeting PM Modi, Chancellor Scholz lauded India as an “anchor of peace and stability” in South Asia and affirmed Germany’s support for India’s vision of regional peace and security.

25 Years of Strategic Partnership Recognized

Marking 25 years of the India-Germany strategic partnership, Prime Minister Modi highlighted Germany’s importance as a key partner for India in trade, investment, and geopolitical strategy.

At the News9 Global Summit, PM Modi described Europe as a “crucial strategic region” and called the Indo-German partnership “historic and special.” “The theme of this summit is India-Germany: A Roadmap for Sustainable Growth. This theme is a symbol of the responsible partnership of both countries,” he said, adding, “Germany is one of our most important partners.”

Germany: India’s Top European Trade Ally

Germany remains India’s largest trading partner in Europe, ranking among India’s top ten global trade partners. In the fiscal year 2020-21, Germany was India’s seventh-largest trading partner globally, and it has consistently maintained a strong position in bilateral trade.

With a robust history of scientific and economic cooperation, the Indo-German partnership continues to set ambitious goals for sustainable development and mutual growth.
