Chancellor Merz Secures Majority to Lead Europe’s Largest Economy

Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), was formally elected as Chancellor in the Bundestag after securing 325 votes out of 630—surpassing the 316 required for a majority. His victory came in the second round of voting.

A veteran of German politics and a prominent conservative voice, Chancellor Merz succeeds Olaf Scholz, stepping into the role at a critical time for Germany amid global geopolitical shifts and economic uncertainties.

Focus on Shared Global Priorities

India and Germany share a broad-based strategic partnership, with cooperation spanning trade, green energy, digital innovation, education, and defense. Under Chancellor Merz’s leadership, the two countries are expected to continue working closely on global issues such as climate change, Indo-Pacific security, and multilateral reform.

The two nations have conducted regular intergovernmental consultations and maintain strong business ties, with Germany being India’s largest trading partner in the EU.

Diplomatic observers say Chancellor Merz infuses fresh energy into Indo-German relations. Both governments are seen as natural partners in shaping a multipolar world order and addressing shared challenges in sustainability and technology.
