India is poised for a workforce transformation, with AI and emerging technologies projected to create 2.73 million new tech jobs by 2028, according to a report by ServiceNow, a leading AI-powered business transformation platform. The country’s workforce is expected to grow from 423.73 million in 2023 to 457.62 million by 2028, reflecting a net addition of 33.89 million workers.
Retail Sector Leads the Tech-Driven Job Boom
The retail industry is set to drive employment growth, requiring an additional 6.96 million workers to support its rapid expansion. Retail professionals have opportunities to enhance their skills in areas like Software Application Development and Data Engineering to stay competitive in a technology-centric market.
Other sectors contributing significantly include:
- Manufacturing: 1.50 million new jobs.
- Education: 0.84 million new jobs.
- Healthcare: 0.80 million new jobs.
“AI will be a key catalyst for job creation across India’s growth engines, particularly in roles requiring advanced technical skills,” noted Sumeet Mathur, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, ServiceNow India Technology & Business Center. “Through initiatives like ‘RiseUp with ServiceNow’ and collaborations with local universities and government programs, we are bridging the skills gap and equipping India’s workforce for a tech-driven future.”
Surging Demand for Tech Roles Across Industries
Tech-related positions are rapidly growing across industries such as Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Telecommunications. Leading this growth are:
- Software Application Developers: 109,700 new roles.
- Systems Software Developers: 48,800 new roles.
- Data Engineers and Web Developers: Over 48,000 new roles each.
Roles like Data Analysts, Software Testers, and Database Architects are also projected to expand, with increases ranging from 42,700 to 47,800 positions. The report highlights the role of emerging technologies in reshaping sectors such as energy, utilities, and government services, fueling workforce growth.
Generative AI Redefines Tech Job Landscape
Generative AI (Gen AI) is revolutionizing tech roles, automating routine tasks and enabling professionals to focus on strategic projects.
- Systems Administrators: Anticipated to save 6.9 hours weekly through automation.
- AI Systems Engineers: Significant task automation, with half the impact stemming from AI.
- Implementation Consultants: Projected to save 1.9 hours weekly.
Even roles with minimal automation impact, such as Platform Owners, could benefit from time savings of up to 30 minutes weekly. By embracing AI and emerging technologies, India is positioning itself as a global leader in the tech economy, unlocking new opportunities for its expanding workforce.
