External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, Canada, to discuss ways to advance the India–Germany Strategic Partnership and strengthen India–EU relations.
In a post on X, Dr. Jaishankar said, “Great to meet FM @JoWadephul of Germany in Niagara today. Discussed advancing our Strategic Partnership and India–EU ties. Exchanged views on Middle East/West Asia, Indo-Pacific and Afghanistan.”
The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in trade, technology, and the green transition, while also addressing key developments in the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, and Afghanistan. Officials described the engagement as a reflection of India’s proactive diplomacy at multilateral platforms and its growing role in shaping global discussions on security and economic cooperation.
Both ministers built on the momentum of their earlier bilateral engagement in New Delhi, where Dr. Jaishankar had highlighted India’s expectation of Germany’s support to expedite the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and assured special attention to German companies investing in India, citing India’s strong manufacturing and innovation base.
During his India visit, Foreign Minister Wadephul had emphasised that “for Germany, India equals Asia,” and reaffirmed New Delhi’s position as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific. He underscored Berlin’s commitment to deepening cooperation across security, technology, skilled workforce exchange, and green innovation, stating that the strategic partnership “has great potential that both sides are determined to realise.”
On the sidelines of the G7 meeting, Dr. Jaishankar also met his counterparts from France, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. With French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, he reviewed the strategic partnership and discussed cooperation in multilateral forums. He also held talks with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on expanding collaboration in trade, health, and technology, and with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to reaffirm the India–UK Vision 2035 for deeper cooperation across key sectors.
