The world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has long been dominated by men, but a groundbreaking new exhibition aims to change that narrative. “Women in MINT – Women in STEM” is a joint initiative launched by the EXPERIMINTA ScienceCenter and the VDI District Association Frankfurt-Darmstadt, supported by the Academy of Crafts Schloss Raesfeld and Fraunhofer India.

This exhibition highlights the experiences, successes, and challenges faced by women who have ventured into the traditionally male-dominated fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.

Opening on February 12, 2025, the exhibition promises to inspire the next generation of girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM, an area often viewed as “untypical” for females. The focus is on authentic and personal interviews with numerous women, offering valuable insights into their careers, childhood dreams, and the obstacles they’ve overcome.

The Heart of the Exhibition: Personal Stories and Role Models

The exhibition delves deep into the journeys of inspiring women from various STEM disciplines. Through personal interviews, visitors will hear first-hand accounts of how these trailblazers pursued their passions, made their way into STEM professions, and broke through gender-based barriers. Their stories reflect not only the triumphs but also the challenges they’ve encountered, from childhood aspirations to navigating professional landscapes traditionally dominated by men.

The exhibition goes beyond showcasing success stories; it encourages girls and young women to follow their own MINT (Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences, and Technology) path, whether in the craft industry, scientific research, or industrial innovation. These women will share the driving forces behind their careers and offer practical advice on how others can follow suit.

A Step Towards a Permanent Initiative

While the exhibition opens its doors on February 13, 2025, it is far more than just a one-off event. This is the start of an ongoing initiative aimed at breaking down gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality in STEM. With its traveling exhibition and various accompanying events, the project will continue to highlight the stories of women in “untypical” STEM professions, sparking awareness and creating new opportunities for women in these fields.

The initiative is not limited to the exhibition space. Through collaborations with institutions such as the Science Gallery in Bangalore, it aims to reach an international audience, reinforcing the global message that STEM is for everyone, regardless of gender.

Challenging Perceptions, Changing the Future

Despite years of progress in gender equality, women in STEM remain a minority. Only 9% of women work in STEM professions, compared to over a third of men, according to MINT-DataLab 2024. The exhibition confronts these disparities head-on, challenging the outdated notion that girls are not interested in STEM subjects. It also emphasizes the need for a more supportive environment that fosters equal opportunities for both men and women, especially in leadership positions, where women remain underrepresented.

By showcasing the stories of women who have not only succeeded in their careers but also overcome gender-based challenges, the exhibition aims to inspire and motivate girls to take on roles that are often thought of as exclusively male.

The Future of STEM: Pink is the New Normal

One of the core messages of the exhibition is clear: STEM is for everyone, even if it glows pink! By creating a platform for women to share their stories and experiences, the “Women in MINT – Women in STEM” exhibition hopes to encourage more girls and young women to envision themselves in STEM roles and pursue their dreams with confidence.

The special exhibition will kick off with a symposium on February 12, 2025, for invited guests at the EXPERIMINTA ScienceCenter, followed by its opening to the public on February 13. This exhibition not only celebrates the accomplishments of women in STEM but also sets the stage for a future where gender no longer defines a person’s potential in science, technology, and innovation.

The “Women in MINT – Women in STEM” initiative is a powerful reminder that the future of STEM is bright, diverse, and inclusive. The exhibition is set to become a catalyst for change, inspiring young minds to break free from societal norms and embark on their own groundbreaking journeys in the world of STEM.
