Germany is emerging as one of the top three European destinations for Indian travellers, with more than 520,000 overnight stays recorded between January and July 2025, according to the German National Tourist Office (GNTO), India. The surge highlights the growing importance of the Indian market for German tourism.

Rising Travel Demand

The travel volume reflects a mix of both leisure and business trips. GNTO data shows that arrivals from India rose by 5.5 per cent year-on-year in the first seven months of 2025, continuing the momentum of post-pandemic recovery.

“India is a crucial market for Destination Germany. The consistent growth we are witnessing underscores the appeal of Germany’s historic cities, natural beauty, and cultural vibrancy,” said Romit Theophilus, Director, Marketing & Sales, GNTO India.

Air Connectivity as a Driver

Expanded air links have been key to this growth. The number of flights between India and Germany increased by 26 per cent in 2024 compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels. The rise in seat capacity has not only supported tourism growth but also reinforced Germany’s accessibility for Indian visitors.

Economic Impact

Indian travellers have proven to be a high-value segment. In 2024, visitors from India generated EUR 1.1 billion in turnover, with average spending pegged at EUR 3,068 per trip. GNTO said this financial contribution cements India’s place as one of the most lucrative long-haul markets for German tourism.

New Campaigns Ahead

To deepen this engagement, GNTO is rolling out fresh campaigns aimed at showcasing Germany beyond its familiar landmarks. Future promotions will include Indian celebrities exploring hidden destinations and authentic experiences across Germany, designed to encourage visitors to discover its lesser-known cultural and natural attractions.

Officials said these initiatives, combined with robust connectivity, will further strengthen Germany’s standing as a preferred European destination for Indian travellers.
