“Germany offers a wholesome experience of scenic beauty and a rich culture, combined with magical theme-routes and eco-friendly tourism. We believe it is the ideal destination for travelers wanting to revel in warm hospitality and scintillating cuisine,” said Romit Theophilus, Director of Marketing & Sales Office – India, GNTO.

Growing Indian tourism in Germany

The surge in Indian tourism to Germany reflects a growing interest among travelers in exploring the country’s cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, historic landmarks, and culinary delights.

With a remarkable growth rate of 32.6% compared to 2022, Germany has emerged as a top choice for Indian tourists seeking memorable vacations.

Germany ranks fourth as a destination for Indian travelers, following Switzerland, UK, and France. According to Market Information India, the top four regions for Indian tourists in Germany are South West Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hessen, and Bavaria.

Sustainable Travel

According to a report by Skift.com/2023, Indian travelers intend to make greener travel decisions, with 85% of Indians traveling sustainably in 2023.

Germany’s commitment to eco-friendly tourism practices further resonates with Indian travelers, who prioritize responsible travel. The country’s well-developed infrastructure, efficient transportation networks, and high safety standards contribute to its appeal as a seamless travel destination.

Additionally, Germany’s impressive performance in global rankings, such as the Nation Brands Index and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, further solidifies its position as a top destination.

Also, room rates in the German hotel industry rise similarly to the European average, making it an accessible choice for travelers.

Germany’s Tourism Themes 2024

Germany’s key tourism themes for 2024 include ‘Simply feel good,’ ‘Stay longer,’ and ‘Slower travel.’ Cultural experiences and trips to the countryside, often combined with city trips, remain very popular among Indians.

Continuing its focus on UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Germany holds the third place worldwide with the highest number of UNESCO Sites, after Italy and China. The newest addition, the Jewish-Medieval Heritage of Erfurt, joined the list in September 2023, adding to the country’s eight UNESCO routes.

As Germany’s tourism industry flourishes, the nation aims to promote its 52 UNESCO World Heritage sites and allure travelers intrigued by its sustainable cultural heritage.

Beyond its deep-rooted history and culture, Germany harbors numerous hidden treasures awaiting discovery by adventurous travelers. Off-the-beaten-path routes unveil charming villages and lesser-known attractions, providing glimpses into the country’s authenticity.

From iconic landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and Munich’s historic streets to the natural wonders of the Black Forest and Rhine Valley, Germany offers a plethora of experiences sure to captivate Indian travelers seeking unforgettable vacations.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead to 2024, Germany anticipates a return to the level of 2019, with a forecasted 3% increase in visitor numbers. The country boasts more than 80 opera houses, over 6,000 museums receiving more than 114 million visitors annually, 200 fashion and lifestyle events, street art, festivals, and over 300 Michelin-starred restaurants.

“The growth of 32.6% compared to last year is no surprise, considering Germany’s impressive ranking in the global Nation Brands Index 2023. This year is even more exciting- we have our biggest European Football event, the Euro Cup, this summer, and we have a host of offerings in the cultural and historical sphere. Situated in the heart of Europe, Germany also offers a vibrant, dynamic, and commercially attractive destination for young travelers. This growing people-to-people contact is crucial in strengthening the foundation of our bilateral partnership like never before,” said Georg Enzweiler, Deputy Head of Mission, German Embassy
