Dr. Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India, visited the Krishi Jagran office, engaging in an insightful discussion with Founder and Editor-in-Chief M.C. Dominic. The conversation touched upon Indo-German agricultural collaboration, Indian mango exports to Germany, and the promotion of organic farming in India.

Strong Indo-German Relations

  1. C. Dominic welcomed Dr. Ackermann, emphasizing his deep connection with India through extensive travels. Dominic noted the growing interest of German business leaders in investing in India.

Dr. Ackermann attributed this confidence to the similar political systems of both countries, where state governments play a crucial role in facilitating investment. He highlighted, “German businesses understand that state governments in both countries can significantly facilitate investment and support.”

Investment Trends in India

Discussing investment trends, Dr. Ackermann revealed that over 2,000 German companies operate in India, spanning various sectors from advanced technology to traditional industries.

“From big companies like Siemens to small and medium-sized enterprises, they are developing advanced technological products,” he stated. The ambassador praised India’s market potential, especially in education and innovation.

Indo-German Agriculture Development Project

On the topic of agriculture, Dr. Ackermann highlighted the success of the Indo-German Agriculture Development Project, which recently facilitated the export of North Indian mangoes to Europe.

“Reaching this level was challenging, but we succeeded by sending the first batch of UP mangoes to Germany,” he noted. He also mentioned significant projects in Andhra Pradesh aimed at promoting organic farming practices.

Promoting Organic Farming

Dr. Ackermann explained Germany’s efforts to promote organic farming in India by educating farmers about the necessary certifications and providing support for transitioning from traditional farming methods.

“We train these farmers and help them understand the benefits of organic farming,” he said. He also hinted at a potential Free Trade Agreement that could simplify agricultural trade exchanges between the two countries.

Shifts in German Agriculture

Regarding the shift towards organic farming in Germany, Dr. Ackermann observed an increasing consumer demand for sustainable food due to climate change concerns. “Approximately 10-15 percent of our farmers are organic, reflecting this shift in consumer consciousness,” he shared.

Changing Dietary Preferences

Addressing the trend of preferring vegetarian foods, Dr. Ackermann noted the rise of veganism and decreasing meat consumption in Germany. “The vegan movement is gaining momentum, and vegetarian foods are becoming more popular in the German market,” he remarked.

Learning Opportunities Between India and Germany

Dr. Ackermann emphasized the need for India to modernize its agriculture sector, suggesting that organic farming could become a significant income source.

He pointed out the success of cooperatives in Germany, which allow small farmers to share resources and reduce costs. Conversely, he admired India’s deep emotional connection with agriculture and food, suggesting Germany could learn from this approach.

Respect for Indian Farmers

Dr. Ackermann concluded by expressing his admiration for the Indian farming community, recognizing their critical role in producing high-quality vegetables, spices, and fruits. “The Indian government and farmers must focus on achieving further progress in this area,” he asserted, highlighting the potential and opportunities within India’s agriculture sector.
