In a boost to India’s clean energy ambitions, GPS Renewables and its subsidiary Proweps on September 8, 2025 announced an exclusive partnership with German firm Biogastechnik Süd GmbH (BGTS) to bring advanced paddle agitators for the country’s compressed biogas (CBG) sector. The technology, marketed under the brand name Varibull, is expected to enhance plant efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve long-term reliability for developers.

Tackling Inefficiencies in Biogas Production

Most Indian CBG developers currently rely on conventional agitators — mechanical mixers that stir organic waste and water inside anaerobic digesters. These units consume significant amounts of electricity and are often ineffective with fibrous feedstock like paddy straw or Napier grass, causing crust formation and sediment build-up.

The Varibull Paddle Agitator, engineered in Germany by BGTS, addresses these issues through improved mixing performance, robust handling of tough substrates, and considerably lower power use.

Local Manufacturing with Global Reach

As part of the agreement, GPS Renewables confirmed that the agitators will be manufactured at its Bengaluru facility. Local production will allow the company to price the equipment more competitively than conventional models, while also positioning India as a potential export hub for advanced biogas technologies.

Industry Voices on the Partnership

Rajesh Ayyappasur, Director of Business Development and Partnerships at GPS Renewables, said the partnership marks “a new product milestone” for the company. He noted that GPS has consistently tackled India’s biogas production challenges through innovation and collaborations with global leaders.

Mainak Chakraborty, CEO and Co-founder of GPS Renewables, pointed out that many Indian plants face “crusting, sediment build-up, and frequent breakdowns” with existing agitators. He said the Varibull’s purpose-built design would enable more efficient mixing, lower energy use, and reliable long-term performance.

Biogastechnik Süd CEO Gregor Maier called India one of the most important growth markets for bioenergy. He praised GPS Renewables’ strong execution capabilities, adding that the collaboration would help Indian developers maximize performance and reduce downtime.

Robert Ohneberg, International Sales Manager at BGTS, stressed that the Varibull has already become one of the world’s top-selling agitators because of its durability and minimal maintenance needs. “By bringing it to India, we want to support operators in achieving higher gas yields, stable processes, and reduced lifecycle costs,” he said.

Future Outlook

Through this alliance, GPS Renewables will integrate the German-developed agitator technology into its turnkey plant solutions and OptiMaxx portfolio. The move gives Indian CBG developers access to a proven, future-ready solution and strengthens Indo-German collaboration in clean energy.
