In a significant step towards enhancing its technological capabilities in marine engineering, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 2 August, with Germany-based Reintjes GmbH, a global leader in marine gearbox design and manufacturing.
The collaboration aims to integrate Reintjes’ high-performance gear trains with select ship engines manufactured at GRSE’s facilities. The joint effort is expected to advance propulsion efficiency and performance in both defence and commercial vessels built for domestic deployment and international markets.
Enhancing Maritime Propulsion Systems
The MoU signals a focused effort to combine Reintjes GmbH’s decades-long expertise in engineering advanced marine propulsion systems with GRSE’s shipbuilding capabilities. The German company is known for its precision-engineered gearboxes that improve propulsion reliability and energy efficiency—features that align with GRSE’s ambitions to adopt next-generation maritime technologies.
A GRSE spokesperson noted that the partnership would contribute to India’s maritime self-reliance by embedding global standards into indigenous ship design and production.
Expanding Global Collaborations
The agreement with Reintjes GmbH is part of GRSE’s broader strategy to build a global ecosystem of technology partners. In recent months, GRSE has formalised multiple international collaborations aimed at expanding its marine equipment and shipbuilding portfolio.
In June 2025, the shipbuilder signed key agreements with:
Berg Propulsion (Sweden) – to modernise propulsion systems for government marine platforms.
SunStone (Denmark) – exploring cooperation for building expedition cruise vessels.
In April 2025, GRSE also joined hands with SWAN Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd to strengthen domestic commercial shipbuilding efforts, reinforcing its commitment to the “Make in India” initiative.
A Leader in Maritime Defence Manufacturing
As a premier defence public sector undertaking (DPSU), GRSE derives approximately 85% of its revenue from shipbuilding, positioning it as a central player in India’s naval manufacturing sector. With its ongoing global partnerships and focus on integrating high-end technologies, GRSE continues to support India’s defence preparedness while making inroads into international commercial markets.
The new MoU with Reintjes GmbH not only reflects the growing synergy between India and Germany in maritime technology but also sets the stage for future innovation in marine propulsion systems tailored for both strategic and civilian use.
