A historic 1962 model Mercedes-Benz bus, once a common sight on the streets of Thiruvananthapuram, has been meticulously restored and is now proudly displayed at MGM ITI, Rajakumari.

A Four-Month Restoration Effort by Students

The bus, originally owned by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), was revived by a dedicated group of Mechanical Department students, who spent nearly four months on the project. They undertook the challenging task of sourcing and assembling spare parts to restore the vehicle to its former glory.

The bus, a rare piece of automotive history, was manufactured in Germany and assembled in India by TATA. After being out of service since 1978, the vehicle was acquired by MGM ITI through an auction, with the vision of bringing it back to life.

Challenges and Support in the Restoration Process

Restoring the bus posed significant challenges, particularly in locating original spare parts. However, the KSRTC supported the students by providing parts from decommissioned buses. The engine, gearbox, and other components, all of German origin, were carefully restored.

The bus originally bore the registration number KLT 5403 under the Travancore State Transport Department and was later re-registered as KLX 604 after KSRTC took over in 1965. MGM ITI has since registered the restored vehicle with the Idukki RTO as KLI 3399. Despite the restoration being nearly complete, the bus has yet to receive a permit to operate on the roads.

A Labor of Love Led by Dedicated Students and Faculty

The restoration project was spearheaded by Kuriakose P V, Head of the Mechanical Department at MGM ITI, alongside 24 students who passionately worked on the bus. Remarkably, the ignition system, powered by a lever on the engine pulley, and the engine itself remain in excellent condition.

“This Mercedes-Benz bus is one of only two of its kind left in India,” said Kuriakose. The decision to restore the bus was driven by the enthusiastic demand from students, locals, and teachers alike.

The team is currently awaiting the arrival of parts for the steering and brake systems. The revival of this iconic bus ensures that it will continue to inspire and educate future generations, preserving a piece of automotive history for years to come.
