India has overtaken Japan to secure its position as the third-largest power in Asia, according to the latest Asia Power Index released by the Lowy Institute. This marks a significant geopolitical shift, fueled by India’s growing economic strength, youthful population, and expanding diplomatic influence.

India’s Steady Climb in Regional Power Rankings

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting hailed India’s steady rise in the 2024 Asia Power Index, attributing the country’s growing stature to several key factors. “India is steadily achieving its potential and exercising greater influence in the region,” the ministry stated in a press release.

Key components of India’s rise include its post-pandemic economic recovery, demographic advantages, and a more prominent role in international diplomacy.

Economic Growth and Future Potential

India’s economy has seen robust recovery, which has contributed to a 4.2-point rise in its Economic Capability score in the Index. The country now stands as the world’s third-largest economy in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms. Moreover, India’s Future Resources score increased by 8.2 points, reflecting the potential for sustained economic growth.

“India benefits from a youthful population that will continue to drive economic expansion and labor force growth in the coming decades,” the ministry noted.

Diplomatic and Cultural Influence

India’s strategic autonomy and non-aligned stance have also allowed the nation to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes effectively. In 2023, India ranked sixth in terms of diplomatic dialogues, highlighting its active engagement in multilateral forums.

India’s cultural influence remains strong as well, supported by a large global diaspora and widespread cultural exports, further enhancing the country’s soft power.

Role in Regional Security and Economic Outreach

India has emerged as a key player in multilateral diplomacy, especially through its participation in security frameworks like the Quad. Although India remains outside formal military alliances, its leadership in regional security dialogues has bolstered its strategic position.

India’s economic outreach, particularly in defence sales such as the BrahMos missile deal with the Philippines, reflects the country’s increasing willingness to extend its influence beyond its immediate neighborhood. The ministry emphasized that these steps show India is beginning to flex its geopolitical muscles.

A Power to Reckon With

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting highlighted the Asia Power Index’s portrayal of India as a growing power in the region. “India has immense potential for future growth,” the ministry stated.

With sustained economic progress and a burgeoning workforce, India is positioned to expand its influence in Asia, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

About the Asia Power Index

First launched by the Lowy Institute in 2018, the Asia Power Index is an annual assessment of power distribution across the Asia-Pacific region. It evaluates 27 countries, measuring their ability to shape the external environment through material capabilities and international influence.

The 2024 edition, which includes Timor-Leste for the first time, is one of the most comprehensive reports on power dynamics in the region. The Index evaluates countries based on eight measures, including economic capability, diplomatic influence, and cultural influence, offering a nuanced understanding of how nations convert resources into power on the global stage.
