Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has partnered with Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to build six state-of-the-art submarines for the Indian Navy, with construction set to begin in 2025. This ambitious project, approved by the Ministry of Defence, is a significant step in bolstering India’s maritime defense and aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
MDL’s Capacity to Handle Large-Scale Submarine Construction
MDL has confirmed that its current infrastructure is well-equipped to execute the project without expansion. The shipyard has the capability to construct up to 11 submarines simultaneously, including ongoing refits of existing Scorpène-class submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. This allows MDL to manage both the six new TKMS U-214NG submarines and three additional enhanced Scorpène-class submarines.
Project Timeline and Scorpène-Class Expansion
The construction of the TKMS U-214NG submarines is expected to take seven years, with a projected completion date of 2032. This timeline coincides with the anticipated completion of sea trials for the first of the three additional enhanced Scorpène-class submarines. MDL already possesses the necessary tooling for Scorpène-class production, which could accelerate the start and progress of the enhanced Scorpène project compared to the U-214NG submarines.
MDL’s Vision for Global Shipbuilding Leadership
Looking beyond these projects, MDL is positioning itself to lead India’s next major naval initiative, Project-76. By leveraging its existing expertise and infrastructure, the shipbuilder aims to solidify its role as a global player in submarine construction.
With significant local content expected in the U-214NG project, MDL’s collaboration with TKMS not only enhances its capabilities but also strengthens Indo-German naval cooperation. The ability to construct and refit multiple submarines simultaneously underscores MDL’s strategic importance in India’s naval modernization efforts.
