Prime Minister Narendra Modi met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G20 summit on Saturday, with both leaders reviewing the steady expansion of India–Germany ties across trade, technology and clean energy.

In a short message on X, PM Modi described the interaction as “wonderful” and underlined the strength of the partnership. “It was wonderful to meet German Chancellor, Mr Friedrich Merz. India’s ties with Germany are robust, especially in areas such as trade, technology, innovation and more,” he wrote.

Focus on Trade, Technology and Green Energy

The meeting highlighted areas where cooperation between the two countries has been growing rapidly. Germany is one of India’s biggest trading partners in Europe and a major source of investment and advanced engineering.

Both leaders are understood to have discussed ongoing work in key sectors such as:

  • Technology and digital innovation
  • Renewable energy and green hydrogen
  • Semiconductor development
  • Skilled workforce mobility
  • Clean manufacturing and climate action
  • Strong Institutional Cooperation

India and Germany have been deepening ties through platforms like the Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) and the High Technology Partnership. Regular political exchanges have kept the relationship on a forward track, especially on issues like supply chain resilience, energy transition and global governance.

Wider Strategic Partnership

The two countries also cooperate in defence manufacturing, cyber security, vocational training and academic exchange. These areas are expected to remain priorities as both sides look to expand collaboration.

Germany has supported several renewable energy projects in India and continues to work closely with New Delhi on long-term climate and sustainability goals.

Growing Engagement

India and Germany have shared a strategic partnership for more than two decades. Saturday’s meeting adds to ongoing high-level engagement between the two governments.

PM Modi’s remarks signal India’s intent to keep working closely with Chancellor Merz’s government as both countries push ahead with innovation-led, technology-focused cooperation.
