Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) will become an official associate supporter of the German House of Science and Innovation (DWIH) in New Delhi starting July 2025, as part of its efforts to expand cooperation and knowledge exchange with partners in India.
Focus on Partnerships and Knowledge Transfer
The university aims to enhance collaboration and promote innovation through its involvement with DWIH New Delhi, a platform operated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) that facilitates dialogue and networking between the Indian and German scientific communities.
“In our new internationalization strategy, we have set ourselves the goal of strengthening proven and well-functioning international activities, while at the same time adapting to changing political, social, and demographic conditions and setting long-term strategic and regional priorities in cooperation with international partners,” said RUB’s Rector, Professor Martin Paul. He recently visited DWIH New Delhi during a higher education policy trip alongside other German university leaders.
As a member of both the University Alliance Ruhr and the Research Alliance Ruhr, RUB intends to explore further research and innovation potential in India.
India Among Top Countries for German Universities
India is currently one of the leading countries of origin for international students in Germany, with nearly 50,000 Indian students enrolled across German institutions. On the RUB campus specifically, India ranks among the top three countries of origin for international students.
At the same time, India is pursuing significant goals in science and research and is focused on expanding its international university partnerships.
Promoting Research Collaboration
Through its participation in DWIH New Delhi, Ruhr University Bochum aims to help promote Germany as a destination for higher education and research and to broaden cooperation in fields such as knowledge transfer. Future initiatives will also include efforts to attract highly qualified talent and establish strategic collaborations in the region.
“The plan is to encourage interested researchers and departments at Ruhr University to participate in formats and events with the DWIH New Delhi in order to achieve networking and expand joint cooperation with Indian partners,” said Monika Sprung, RUB’s representative on the advisory board of DWIH New Delhi and head of RUB’s International Office.
DWIH Network’s Global Role
The German Houses of Science and Innovation (DWIH) were established in 2008/2009 by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and the Alliance of Science Organizations. Their objective is to strengthen Germany’s position as a location for research, science, and innovation.
The DWIH New Delhi is part of a global network of six centers managed by DAAD and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. It provides information about research funding, career opportunities, and collaboration prospects in Germany and assists German institutions in accessing India’s research and innovation landscape.
Currently, 28 German research institutions, universities, funding bodies, and research-oriented companies actively support the work of DWIH New Delhi.
With RUB’s new involvement, the collaboration between Indian and German academic and research institutions is expected to gain further momentum in the coming years.
