In a major step towards sustainable energy, Germany’s International Agriculture Cooperation (IAK) Agrar Consulting GmbH has joined forces with Telangana’s Cooperative Electric Supply Society (CESS) to turn Sircilla in Rajanna Sircilla district into a model for renewable energy. The collaboration aims to decentralize power generation through Renewable Energy Cooperatives (RECs), allowing local residents to actively participate in solar energy production.
Transitioning to a Solar Power Hub
During discussions with Telangana’s Agriculture and Cooperation Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, IAK chief Sven Gelhaar unveiled plans to transition CESS into a solar power center. The initiative intends to convert more than 2.5 lakh electricity consumers into solar energy producers, with a goal of achieving 80% energy self-sufficiency for CESS. This shift is expected to significantly cut reliance on conventional power sources.
Massive Reduction in Carbon Emissions
By embracing solar energy, the project is estimated to slash carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by around 7,05,000 tons annually. This move aligns with global sustainability goals and reinforces India’s commitment to green energy.
Innovative Solar Panel Development
As part of the initiative, IAK is collaborating with an Indian-led German start-up to develop next-generation solar panels. These panels, designed to be lightweight, cost-effective, and fully recyclable, are expected to set new industry standards. Production is scheduled to commence in Telangana by 2027, with an initial investment ranging between $4 million and $5 million. The project aims to roll out 50 MW of advanced solar panels, further boosting the region’s renewable energy capabilities.
Government Backing and Investment Support
Minister Nageswara Rao has expressed strong backing for the initiative, directing officials to draft a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for immediate implementation. The project is set to receive financial support from both public and private investors, including the German Development Bank (KfW). With strategic investment and cooperation, this partnership is expected to drive economic growth while enhancing environmental sustainability in Telangana.
