Germany’s tourism industry is witnessing a significant upswing, fueled by a growing number of Indian travelers. In 2024 alone, the country recorded an 8.6% rise in overnight stays from Indian visitors, with the total reaching nearly 898,000. With enhanced air connectivity, curated travel packages, and easier visa access, Germany is positioning itself as a leading destination for Indian honeymooners, cultural explorers, and nature lovers.

Indian Visitor Numbers Rise Sharply

According to the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), 71,138 more Indian tourists visited Germany in 2024 compared to the previous year. The total number of overnight stays by Indian travelers reached 897,841, marking a steady upward trend. Notably, the average length of stay also increased—from 9.3 nights in 2023 to 9.6 nights in 2024—indicating stronger engagement with the destination.

A recent report by Skift India further revealed that Indian tourist spending is growing four times faster than the global average, underlining the value and potential of the Indian market for Germany’s tourism economy.

New Campaigns Launched: Romance, Culture, and Nature

To cater to the evolving interests of Indian tourists, the GNTB has launched three major tourism campaigns for 2025:

1. Romantic Germany

Designed for couples and honeymooners, this package offers enchanting experiences such as private wine cruises along the Moselle River, cozy spa retreats in the Bavarian Alps, and scenic spring walks through castle gardens in Saxony. The campaign highlights Germany as a dreamy yet offbeat European honeymoon destination.

2. Cultureland Germany

For history and art lovers, this itinerary explores 52 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including medieval towns like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Berlin’s vibrant art scene, and Wiesbaden’s thermal spa culture. Chemnitz, named the 2025 European Capital of Culture, will host a year-long cultural festival showcasing art exhibitions and performances.

3. Embrace German Nature

Aimed at eco-conscious travelers, this initiative offers green getaways to destinations like the Black Forest, the Wadden Sea National Park, and the alpine lakes of Bavaria. With hiking trails, national parks, and sustainable lodgings, Germany is embracing the global trend of nature-based tourism.

“Germany Ignites Indian Wanderlust”: GNTO Director

“Germany ignites Indian wanderlust with romantic escapes and cultural explorations that resonate with modern travelers,” said Romit Theophilus, Director of Marketing & Sales at the GNTO India office.
“Whether it’s a couple seeking peace in nature or an adventurous deep dive into our historic trails, Germany offers a personalized experience. Our focus on sustainability and cultural depth aligns well with the preferences of Indian tourists.”

Improved Air Connectivity and Visa Access

Germany has improved its air connectivity with India significantly. Monthly flights between the two countries increased from 241 in January 2019 to 309 in January 2025—a 28% rise. Lufthansa alone now operates 64 weekly flights between India and Europe, the highest number in any Asia-Pacific country.

“With over 60 years in India, we’ve deepened our commitment through expanded routes and premium services like the Lufthansa Allegris First Class, which will launch from Bengaluru,” a Lufthansa Group spokesperson noted.

To further ease travel, Germany is digitizing its visa process. Speaking at the press conference, Georg Enzweiler, Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in India, confirmed that national visa digitization is already underway and will soon be extended to Schengen visas—making travel more accessible for Indian tourists.

Germany Becomes a Destination for Indian Weddings and Veg Food Lovers

Germany is emerging as a unique venue for Indian weddings, thanks to its fairy-tale castles, vineyards, and historical settings. The country is also adapting to Indian culinary preferences, with a growing number of restaurants now offering vegetarian and vegan options.

Fairytale Route Turns 50 in 2025

Adding to its charm, Germany’s famed Fairytale Route—based on the stories of the Brothers Grimm—celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025. The route features immersive storytelling events, themed accommodations, and cultural performances, drawing families and literary enthusiasts alike.

€2 Million Invested to Attract Indian Tourists

With outbound travel from India projected to grow 230% by 2027, the GNTB is stepping up its efforts in the Indian market. In 2025, the board will invest €2 million in marketing campaigns targeting Indian tourists via digital platforms, travel influencers, and on-ground promotional events.

Students, Families Also Fuel Tourism Growth

Germany is home to over 50,000 Indian students, many of whom are visited by friends and family. This academic link is another strong driver of travel between the two countries, alongside business and leisure tourism.

A Strategic Bet on Indian Travelers

With strategic investments, enhanced connectivity, personalized experiences, and easier visa access, Germany is making a compelling case for Indian travelers. Whether it’s a honeymoon, cultural retreat, or eco-adventure, Germany is preparing to welcome more Indian tourists than ever before.
