In a major step toward advancing technology-driven healthcare, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Germany’s Technische Universität (TU) Dresden have entered into a long-term collaboration to integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and extended reality into clinical practice. The partnership, formalized through a Letter of Intent (LoI), aims to foster translational research, digital innovation, and joint startup development.

Strategic Pact to Modernize Surgery and Healthcare Delivery

The formal agreement was signed by Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, and Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, during a three-day Indo-German workshop on “Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality, and Robotics in Healthcare: Emerging Pathways from Diagnosis to Therapy.”

Held from July 16 to 18 at TU Dresden, the workshop brought together over 50 clinicians, scientists, and industry experts from both nations. It was supported by the Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) and the Embassy of India in Berlin, reinforcing the shared ambition of India and Germany to co-develop deep-tech healthcare solutions.

TU Dresden–IIT Madras transCampus Legacy Expanded

The collaboration is set within the framework of the transCampus platform — a flagship initiative of TU Dresden in partnership with IIT Madras. With AIIMS New Delhi now joining as a core partner, the platform is evolving into a multidisciplinary ecosystem that connects engineering, medicine, data science, and clinical applications.

Prof. Ursula Staudinger highlighted the significance of the tie-up: “This partnership brings together Germany’s strengths in medically oriented engineering and India’s renowned clinical capabilities to create a powerful interdisciplinary research model focused on future healthcare challenges.”

Transforming Healthcare Through Deep-Tech Integration

Calling the agreement a “game changer,” Dr. M. Srinivas noted that the partnership would harness AIIMS’ extensive clinical experience with TU Dresden’s engineering expertise. “We are setting a global precedent for the development of future-ready healthcare systems that can be scaled far beyond our two nations,” he said.

The workshop underscored the role of emerging technologies in transforming patient care, particularly through joint efforts in translational research and startup incubation.

Strong Indo-German Clinical and Academic Representation

The AIIMS delegation included leading clinicians and specialists from New Delhi, such as:

Dr. Sandeep Agarwala, Head of Paediatric Surgery

Dr. Nitish Naik, Professor of Cardiology

Dr. M.D. Ray, Professor of Surgical Oncology, Dr. BRAIRCH

Dr. Anita Dhar, Professor of Surgical Disciplines

Dr. Kritika Rangarajan, Associate Professor, Radio Diagnosis, Dr. BRAIRCH

Their participation marked the beginning of a deeper scientific collaboration with TU Dresden across multiple medical domains.

Strengthening Science Diplomacy Between India and Germany

The event also served as a significant milestone in Indo-German science diplomacy. It was inaugurated by Dr. Ramanuj Banerjee, Science Counsellor at the Embassy of India in Berlin, on behalf of India’s Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Ajit Gupte.

By linking world-class academic institutions and clinical leaders, the partnership is poised to influence global healthcare innovation and policy.
