German industrial safety and automation specialist Schmersal Group has expanded its Global Competence Centre (GCC) in Pune, reinforcing India’s growing role in the company’s global engineering, digitalisation and product development strategy. The company has inaugurated a new 25,000-square-foot facility and simultaneously launched six new products developed and manufactured in India, underscoring its commitment to the government’s Make in India initiative.

The expansion marks another milestone in the India operations of the Wuppertal-headquartered Schmersal Group, which has steadily increased its investments in the country over the past decade. The new facility will support a broader range of global functions, including engineering services, software development, information technology, finance and data-driven business solutions.

India Emerging as Strategic Hub for Schmersal’s Global Operations

The newly inaugurated centre in Pune significantly increases Schmersal’s operational footprint in India and reflects the company’s confidence in the country’s engineering talent and innovation ecosystem.

According to company officials, the expanded Global Competence Centre is expected to serve as a key hub for supporting Schmersal’s international operations while enabling closer collaboration between global teams and Indian engineers. The centre will house specialists working across software engineering, enterprise technology platforms, digital transformation initiatives, cybersecurity, product lifecycle management and business process support.

The development builds on Schmersal’s long-standing presence in India, where the company already operates a manufacturing facility at Ranjangaon near Pune and engineering support operations serving global markets. Schmersal first established its global support IT centre in Pune in 2018, describing India as one of its competence centres for SAP implementation and software development across the group.

Six New Products Introduced Under Make in India Initiative

Alongside the inauguration of the new facility, Schmersal unveiled six products designed and manufactured in India. The launch forms part of the company’s localisation strategy and aligns with India’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities in industrial automation and safety technologies.

The products are aimed at sectors including manufacturing, industrial automation, elevators, machine safety and process industries, where demand for advanced safety systems continues to rise amid increasing adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.

The company said the new product introductions demonstrate India’s growing capabilities not only as a manufacturing base but also as a centre for engineering innovation and product development.

Indo-German Industrial Cooperation in Advanced Manufacturing

The latest expansion also highlights the broader trend of German industrial companies deepening their presence in India as part of global supply-chain diversification and localisation efforts.

Schmersal, founded in Germany in 1945, is a global provider of machine safety, industrial automation and occupational safety solutions, with operations spanning more than 60 countries. The group develops and manufactures safety switches, sensors, controllers and related automation technologies used across manufacturing industries worldwide.

India has become increasingly important within the company’s global network. Over the years, Schmersal has expanded beyond manufacturing into engineering, software development and digital support services, positioning Pune as a significant centre for its international operations.

Boost for India’s Engineering and Technology Ecosystem

Industry observers note that the expansion reflects a broader shift among multinational manufacturers towards establishing higher-value engineering and technology capabilities in India, moving beyond traditional production activities.

By expanding its Global Competence Centre and introducing locally developed products, Schmersal joins a growing list of German companies leveraging India’s skilled workforce for global engineering, research, digitalisation and innovation functions. The move is also expected to create additional employment opportunities in advanced technology and engineering domains.

The investment comes at a time when India and Germany are intensifying cooperation in manufacturing, industrial innovation, digital technologies and supply-chain resilience, making such expansions an increasingly important component of the broader Indo-German economic partnership.
