The Indian Air Force and the German Air and Space Force have held their inaugural Air Staff Talks, establishing a new service-level mechanism to deepen bilateral defence engagement.
The three-day talks, conducted in New Delhi from August 11 to 13, 2026, focused on training cooperation, operational exchanges and capability development. The Indian Air Force described the meeting as an important step in strengthening defence ties between India and Germany.
Structured dialogue between air forces
The talks provided senior officials from the two air forces with a platform to review areas of mutual interest and identify opportunities for closer professional engagement.
Training exchanges could enable personnel from both sides to share operational experience and gain greater familiarity with each other’s procedures. Discussions on capability development also reflected the two forces’ interest in addressing the changing requirements of modern air operations.
No specific projects, agreements or schedule for the next round of talks were announced.
The launch of the dialogue gives the Indian Air Force and the German Air and Space Force a structured channel through which they can review ongoing cooperation and develop future initiatives.
Cooperation builds on Tarang Shakti exercise
The Air Staff Talks follow growing interaction between the two forces in recent years. Germany participated in the first edition of the Indian Air Force-led multinational exercise Tarang Shakti in August 2024.
Five German Eurofighter aircraft and an A400M military transport aircraft took part in the exercise at Sulur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu. German aircraft trained alongside platforms operated by India and other participating countries, including France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
The October 2024 India–Germany joint statement issued after the seventh Inter-Governmental Consultations welcomed the cooperation between the Indian and German air forces during Tarang Shakti. Both governments also agreed to intensify security and defence exchanges, including through defence research, technology collaboration, co-development and co-production.
Further German participation planned
Germany is also expected to participate in the next Tarang Shakti air combat exercise, scheduled to be held in India in September 2026. The plan was included in the India–Germany joint statement issued on January 12, 2026.
The forthcoming exercise and the newly established Air Staff Talks create two complementary tracks for cooperation: operational interaction through multinational training and regular dialogue between the respective air force headquarters.
The engagement forms part of a broader expansion of India–Germany defence relations. Alongside air-force cooperation, the two countries have increased naval exchanges, defence-policy discussions and contacts between their defence industries.
The inaugural Air Staff Talks add a formal air-force component to this expanding partnership, with training, operational exchanges and capability development identified as the principal areas for future engagement.
