The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the German Research Foundation (DFG-Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) have announced a call for proposals for joint Indo-German academic research projects in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Program Goals and Advantages

This initiative, open year-round with no submission deadline, aims to strengthen research ties between India and Germany. The program supports high-standard international research projects through ICSSR’s Programme for International Collaboration and DFG’s Individual Research Grants (Sachbeihilfe), fostering collaborative research endeavors.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants must hold permanent positions at recognized research or academic institutions in India or Germany, including publicly funded universities, UGC-recognized deemed universities, and ICSSR research institutes.

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent qualification and demonstrate a proven track record of high-quality research through previous studies and publications.

Funding Allocation

ICSSR will provide up to Rs 25 lakhs per proposal for the Indian component, with project durations ranging from two to three years. DFG will fund the German component. Each proposal must designate lead partners from both India and Germany, who will collaboratively write and submit the proposal to their respective funding agencies.

How to Submit Proposals

Proposals must comply with the submission guidelines of both ICSSR and DFG. German researchers will submit their proposals via DFG’s electronic system “elan” (elan.dfg.de). It is essential that the scientific content of the proposals remains identical in both submissions. Researchers must also ensure adherence to the ethical clearance requirements of their respective countries.

Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation process will involve separate assessments by ICSSR and DFG, focusing on scientific merit, the rationale for collaboration, and the qualifications and compatibility of the team members. Only proposals recommended by both ICSSR and DFG will receive funding approval. Unilateral funding is not an option.
