Amazon Web Services (AWS) has selected Hyderabad and Berlin for the next phase of its global Builder Loft expansion, placing the Indian and German cities among three technology hubs where the company plans to establish permanent community spaces for developers.
AWS announced on August 18, 2026, that the new Builder Lofts would open in Hyderabad, Berlin and São Paulo later this year. The facilities will provide free workshops, hackathons, networking events, startup pitch sessions, content-creation facilities and collaborative working areas.
Although the expansion is not a bilateral India–Germany initiative, the inclusion of Hyderabad and Berlin in the same three-city programme highlights the growing importance of their respective developer, startup and technology ecosystems.
Hyderabad centre to focus on AI and cloud skills
The Hyderabad Builder Loft will provide Indian developers with a dedicated space to develop skills in artificial intelligence and cloud-native architecture. It will also host programmes connecting developers, students, technology professionals and local communities.
Hyderabad is the only Indian city included in the latest expansion. AWS said the centre would support developers working on applications intended for Indian as well as international markets.
The city has developed into one of India’s major technology centres, housing global capability centres, cloud operations, research facilities and a growing base of startups and software professionals. Its selection gives India a place in AWS’s initial international expansion of the permanent Builder Loft model.
Berlin programme to cover digital sovereignty and security
In Berlin, the planned Builder Loft will focus partly on issues receiving increasing attention within Germany and the European Union, including digital sovereignty and cybersecurity preparedness.
AWS plans to organise educational sessions, hackathons, security-readiness workshops and community meetings at the facility. The Berlin centre is also expected to connect Germany’s developer and startup communities with technology networks elsewhere in Europe and internationally.
The announcement follows the launch of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which the company has positioned as cloud infrastructure developed to address European requirements concerning operational autonomy and data control.
Permanent spaces for developer communities
The Builder Lofts are intended to function as permanent meeting and learning spaces rather than temporary corporate event venues. Local AWS user groups, student organisations and independent developer communities will be able to organise programmes at the facilities.
AWS will provide the physical space, infrastructure and technical support, while local developer groups and community organisers will help shape the programming. Community leaders will also be able to request the venues for eligible meetups without paying a hosting fee.
The initiative builds on AWS’s earlier Pop-up Lofts and Gen AI Lofts. The company opened its first permanent Builder Loft in San Francisco in July 2025. According to AWS, the San Francisco facility has since received more than 22,500 developers and typically holds between four and eight community events each week.
AWS Director of Developer Experience David Nalley said the permanent spaces are intended to enable developers to build projects and learn from one another through in-person interaction.
Hyderabad and Berlin enter common innovation network
The three planned locations have been assigned priorities reflecting their regional technology environments. Hyderabad will concentrate on AI capabilities and cloud development, Berlin on digital sovereignty and security, and São Paulo on partnerships with universities, startups and technology communities across Latin America.
For India and Germany, the simultaneous selection of Hyderabad and Berlin creates a shared institutional format for developer engagement across two important technology hubs. While AWS has not announced any direct collaboration between the centres, their inclusion in the same international network could provide a common platform for technical learning, startup engagement and community-led innovation.
AWS is expected to announce the specific opening dates and programme schedules for the three Builder Lofts separately.
