The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has achieved a notable accomplishment by earning the esteemed Oeko-Tex certification for its Eri Silk.
This certification, awarded by Germany on India’s 78th Independence Day, underscores the exceptional craftsmanship of the region and positions Eri Silk as a globally recognized sustainable textile.
Eri Silk: The World’s Only Vegan Silk
Eri Silk is renowned for its ethical production process, which differentiates it from traditional silk. Unlike conventional methods that involve killing the moth inside the cocoon, Eri Silk production allows the moth to naturally exit the cocoon, preserving it for use.
This eco-friendly practice has earned Eri Silk the title of the world’s only vegan silk and a symbol of sustainability within the textile industry.
Oeko-Tex Certification: A Seal of Quality and Sustainability
The Oeko-Tex certification is a globally recognized standard known for its rigorous criteria, ensuring that textiles are free from harmful substances and produced under environmentally responsible conditions.
For Eri Silk, which is also a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, this certification further authenticates its regional significance and enhances its appeal on the international stage.
Expanding Global Reach for Eri Silk
This achievement marks a significant step forward in introducing Eri Silk to international markets, expanding its global presence, and showcasing the potential of Northeast India in the textile sector.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia praised the NEHHDC team on Twitter for their success, highlighting this milestone in promoting Assam’s cultural heritage through sustainable practices.
A ministry press release emphasized that this milestone positions Eri Silk as a leading eco-friendly fabric in the global market, further solidifying its status as a unique and sustainable textile.
