Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on 11 September, in Berlin during the second leg of his three-nation tour. Jaishankar conveyed personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and upcoming engagements.
“Honoured to meet Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin today. Conveyed the personal greetings of PM Modi. Look forward to his visit to India for the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations,” Jaishankar shared in a post on X, referring to the upcoming visit, which will also mark the continuation of India-Germany cooperation in various sectors.
Strategic Talks with Chancellor’s Advisor
Jaishankar had an in-depth conversation with Jens Plotner, Security and Foreign Policy Advisor to Chancellor Scholz. The discussions highlighted important strategic developments and the groundwork for future collaborations.
“Our conversation focussed on preparations for IGC and important strategic developments,” Jaishankar noted.
Strengthening Ties with CDU Leadership
During his visit, Jaishankar met Friedrich Merz, Chairman of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, and members of the CDU-CSU parliamentary group. Discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations, regional security, and shared global challenges.

A comprehensive discussion on our bilateral relationship as well as regional and global issues. Appreciated his many insights and suggestions to strengthen our strategic partnership,” Jaishankar stated.
Tribute to Indian Heritage
As part of his visit, Jaishankar paid tribute to India’s cultural heritage by visiting the Humboldt Forum, a museum dedicated to human history, art and culture.
“The replica of the East Gate of the Sanchi Stupa stands outside the Humboldt Forum. A representation of India’s rich heritage in the heart of Berlin!,” the minister posted on X, along with the photographs.
Engagement with German Parliament Leadership
On Tuesday, Jaishankar met Michael Roth, Chairman of the German Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. The conversation covered pressing global challenges and explored opportunities for deeper cooperation between India and Germany.
“Glad to meet Mr. Michael Roth, MP and Chairman of the @Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs. Shared views on current global challenges, and possibilities of new collaborations between India and Germany,” Jaishankar posted.
Dialogue with Security Policy Experts
Jaishankar also participated in a lively exchange with foreign affairs and security policy experts organized by the Munich Security Conference in Berlin. Discussions touched on the changing global order, security concerns, and the growing strategic alignment between India and Germany.
“Exchanged perspectives on the changing global order, multipolarity, security challenges and the strategic convergences between India and Germany,” Jaishankar remarked.
Discussions with the Bundestag Members
Furthering diplomatic relations, Jaishankar interacted with members of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and gained their perspectives on contemporary global issues. “Appreciated their insights on contemporary global issues. Value their support for stronger India-Germany relations,” he said.
Meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock
Before meeting Chancellor Scholz, Jaishankar held comprehensive discussions with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. Their meeting reviewed the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, covering areas such as trade, defense, and security.
Jaishankar’s visit to Germany followed his attendance at the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council Ministerial Meeting for Strategic Dialogue in Saudi Arabia, marking the second stop on his diplomatic tour.
