German Ambassador Dr Jasper Wieck has formally begun his tenure in India after presenting his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The ceremony marked his transition from Ambassador-Designate to Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to India and opened a new chapter in his association with the country.
President Murmu received the credentials of Ambassador Dr Wieck and five other newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 24, 2026. The other envoys represented Sweden, South Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria and Moldova.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Dr Wieck thanked President Murmu for receiving him and accepting his credentials.
“Happy to now officially be the Ambassador of Germany to India. Next step: further strengthening Indo-German ties,” Ambassador Dr Wieck said in a message shared on social media.
Future generations at the centre of partnership
In his first message after formally assuming office, Ambassador Dr Wieck presented the India–Germany relationship as a forward-looking partnership requiring continued engagement, determination and new ideas.
Introducing himself in Hindi as “Germany ka Rajdoot”, Ambassador Dr Wieck described the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan as dignified and beautiful. He said his interaction with President Murmu also provided an opportunity for a meaningful exchange on bilateral relations.
Ambassador Dr Wieck said he was deeply impressed by President Murmu and her strong commitment to the India–Germany partnership. During their meeting, he also reiterated an invitation from German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for President Murmu to visit Germany.
Reflecting on the 75-year diplomatic relationship between the two countries, Ambassador Dr Wieck said the present conditions for advancing the friendship could hardly be more favourable. However, he underlined that realising the partnership’s full potential would require continuous engagement, resolve and fresh thinking.
He placed particular emphasis on advancing bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit and “for the sake of our children”, expressing the same sentiment in Hindi as “hamare bachchon ke liye”.
The message places future generations at the heart of Ambassador Dr Wieck’s vision for India–Germany relations, linking the immediate bilateral agenda with longer-term economic, environmental and social priorities.
Building on 75 years of diplomatic relations
Ambassador Dr Wieck assumes office as India and Germany mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. The milestone comes at a time when the two countries are seeking to expand their strategic partnership across trade, investment, defence, clean energy, climate action, technology, research, education and skilled mobility.
President Murmu expressed confidence that the tenures of the newly appointed envoys would help deepen bilateral relations, expand trade and cultural exchanges, and strengthen cooperation between India and their respective countries.
India–Germany relations have gradually expanded beyond conventional diplomatic and commercial engagement. Their bilateral agenda now includes cooperation in artificial intelligence, digitalisation, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, green hydrogen, sustainable mobility, defence, research and the movement of students and skilled professionals.
Against this backdrop, Ambassador Dr Wieck’s call for sustained engagement and fresh ideas reflects the growing scope of the partnership and the need to translate policy commitments into long-term outcomes.
A familiar face in New Delhi
This is Ambassador Dr Wieck’s second diplomatic assignment in India. He previously served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in New Delhi from 2017 to 2020, giving him direct experience of India and the bilateral relationship.
Before returning to New Delhi, Ambassador Dr Wieck served as Political Director at Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defence from 2022 to 2026.
His earlier assignments include serving as Deputy Director General for South Asia and Indo-Pacific Policy at the German Federal Foreign Office and as Special Representative of the German Government for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Ambassador Dr Wieck has also worked on East and Southeast Asian affairs, defence and security policy, and at Germany’s Permanent Delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels.
He succeeds German Ambassador Dr Philipp Ackermann as Germany’s Ambassador to India and Bhutan.
Ambassador Dr Wieck’s experience in regional diplomacy and security policy is expected to be relevant as India and Germany explore closer cooperation in defence, strategic technologies and the Indo-Pacific.
Seeking to act as a catalyst
Before formally assuming office, Ambassador Dr Wieck had described the India–Germany friendship as resting on “deep and solid foundations”.
He said that India and Germany had emerged as trusted and reliable partners in a rapidly changing world and expressed his intention to act as a catalyst for broadening and deepening the strategic partnership.
Ambassador Dr Wieck also pledged to strengthen further the bonds of friendship between the two countries. His remarks following the credential ceremony build on that vision by identifying sustained engagement, fresh ideas and responsibility towards future generations as guiding principles for his tenure.
As India and Germany mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, Ambassador Dr Wieck’s assumption of office brings renewed attention to a partnership increasingly shaped by economic opportunities, technological transformation, global challenges and a shared interest in building cooperation that extends beyond the present generation.
