German footwear company BÄR has launched a dedicated direct-to-consumer platform in India, expanding its presence in the country from manufacturing to domestic retail.

The company announced the launch on August 12, 2026. Its initial range is being offered through an India-specific website with nationwide delivery, at prices between ₹7,499 and ₹13,999. BÄR has not announced plans for physical stores in the country.

Founded in 1982 in Bietigheim-Bissingen in southern Germany, the company produces formal, casual and active-lifestyle footwear.

From manufacturing base to consumer market

Although the announcement marks the opening of a dedicated retail channel in India, BÄR has maintained a manufacturing presence in the country for more than three decades.

According to the company’s official website, it has manufactured footwear at its own production facility since 1995. Its Indian subsidiary, Baer Shoes India Pvt. Ltd., operates a production unit in Ambur, Tamil Nadu.

The Ambur facility employs more than 400 people, according to information published by the company. BÄR also states that social standards at the subsidiary have been certified since 2011 in accordance with the International Labour Organization’s core labour standards.

The latest expansion means that India will now serve the company as both a production location and a domestic sales market.

Dedicated online retail channel

BÄR’s India entry follows an online-first model, enabling the company to sell directly to consumers without initially establishing a physical store network. The launch covers footwear for men and women across formal, casual and active-lifestyle categories.

The company has not disclosed the investment associated with the retail expansion, its sales targets for India or whether it plans to develop an offline distribution network.

Expanding scope of India–Germany business ties

BÄR’s retail launch reflects the widening scope of India–Germany commercial engagement beyond established areas such as automobiles, engineering, chemicals and industrial technology.

Its progression from manufacturing in Tamil Nadu to selling directly in the Indian market also demonstrates India’s dual role in the operations of international companies—as a production base and an expanding consumer market.

The development adds a consumer-business dimension to bilateral economic relations while building on an India–Germany manufacturing connection that dates back to 1995.
