A meeting between Germany’s Ambassador and India’s Defence Secretary, alongside an Indian military delegation’s visit to Germany, highlights continued engagement in defence dialogue and officer training.

German Ambassador to India Amb. Dr. Jasper Wieck met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on 8 October 2026, with discussions focused on bilateral defence cooperation and the strategic partnership.

“Newly appointed German Ambassador to India Mr Jasper Wieck paid a courtesy call on Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on October 08, 2026. The two sides discussed India Germany defence cooperation and strategic partnership, with focus on further strengthening bilateral defence ties,” the Ministry of Defence stated on X.

The meeting came during a week of engagements between Indian and German defence institutions, including an Indian Military Academy delegation’s visit to Germany and discussions between the two countries’ defence chiefs.

Military training exchange in Germany

A three-member delegation led by Lieutenant General Nagendra Singh, Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, visited the German Army Officers School in Dresden and the 371 Mechanised Infantry Battalion on 6–7 October 2026.

The visit formed part of an Instructor Exchange Programme, with the Embassy of India in Berlin highlighting its contribution to professional interaction between the two countries’ military institutions.

The Embassy said the engagement supported “enhancing mutual understanding” and the “sharing of best practices in officer cadet’s training”.

The exchange brings military education into the wider bilateral defence relationship. Its stated focus on officer-cadet training provides a practical area of cooperation alongside senior-level discussions on strategic and technological engagement.

Visits to both an officers’ school and a mechanised infantry battalion also placed the programme across training and military unit settings. The public announcement did not provide details of individual sessions or subsequent activities under the exchange.

Defence chiefs discuss military and technological cooperation

The diplomatic meeting and training exchange followed talks on 6 October between Chief of Defence Staff General N S Raja Subramani and General Carsten Breuer, Germany’s Chief of Defence, during the latter’s official visit to India.

General Breuer was welcomed with a ceremonial guard of honour. The discussions reaffirmed the bilateral defence partnership and addressed military cooperation, alongside strategic and technological engagement.

The Integrated Defence Staff Headquarters said the talks focused on “strengthening military cooperation and deepening strategic and technological engagements”.

The defence chiefs’ meeting provided the senior military context for the week’s engagements, while the Defence Secretary’s discussion with Ambassador Wieck continued the dialogue at the diplomatic and administrative level.

Cooperation across defence institutions

Taken together, the engagements show India–Germany defence cooperation proceeding through several institutional channels: senior military leadership, diplomatic discussions and professional training exchanges.

The Instructor Exchange Programme adds a distinct dimension to this cooperation. The Embassy’s emphasis on mutual understanding and officer-cadet training identifies military education as a concrete area of interaction between the two countries.

The public announcement of Ambassador Wieck’s meeting with the Defence Secretary outlined the broad objective of strengthening bilateral ties, without identifying a new agreement, individual projects or implementation timelines.

The latest developments therefore document continued defence dialogue alongside practical professional exchanges. They bring renewed attention to the role of military training and institutional contact within the wider India–Germany strategic partnership.
