Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 27 April, hailed India’s rise as a major global space power, crediting the country’s decades-long journey of innovation, perseverance, and self-reliance for achieving global milestones in space exploration. Speaking during the 121st episode of Mann ki Baat, Modi reflected on India’s space journey, celebrated its achievements, and outlined an ambitious roadmap for future missions.

From Bullock Carts to Lunar Landings

Marking 50 years since the launch of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, the Prime Minister recalled the modest beginnings of the country’s space program. He described how young scientists, lacking modern technology and infrastructure, often transported vital equipment on bullock carts and bicycles.

“It was the extraordinary talent, relentless dedication, and deep patriotic spirit of those scientists that set the foundation for India’s success in space exploration,” Modi emphasized.

India’s Stellar Achievements in Space

Highlighting key milestones, Modi pointed out that India has become a global leader by executing space missions at minimal costs while delivering remarkable results.

“Today, India holds the record for launching 104 satellites simultaneously and is the first nation to land near the Moon’s South Pole,” he said. Modi also celebrated India’s accomplishments with the Mars Orbiter Mission and the Aditya-L1 mission to study the Sun.

“Our space program has not only been cost-effective but also immensely successful, making India a preferred partner for satellite launches and missions worldwide,” the Prime Minister added.

Private Sector Fuels Space Startup Boom

Reflecting on recent policy changes, Modi said the decision to open the space sector to private companies has ignited a wave of innovation among the youth.

“Ten years ago, India had only one space startup. Today, there are over 325, each achieving new milestones and pushing the boundaries of space technology,” he said.

He noted that India is preparing for a series of significant future missions, including Gaganyaan, SpaDex, Chandrayaan-4, the Venus Orbiter Mission, and a Mars Lander Mission.

“The coming years will usher in even greater possibilities, with our scientists poised to make the country proud yet again,” Modi said.

A Tribute to Dr. K Kasturirangan

The Prime Minister also paid heartfelt tribute to former ISRO chairman Dr. K Kasturirangan, who passed away recently. Modi credited Dr. Kasturirangan for elevating India’s space program to new heights and for his lasting contributions to science and education.

“Under Dr. Kasturirangan’s leadership, ISRO gained international recognition. Many of the satellites we rely on today were launched under his guidance,” he said.

Modi also highlighted Dr. Kasturirangan’s pivotal role in drafting the New National Education Policy, which envisions a future-ready education system tailored to the 21st century.

“His visionary thinking, commitment to innovation, and selfless service will forever inspire the nation,” the Prime Minister concluded.
