NTPC is in discussions with potential buyers in Germany, Japan and South Korea for green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels, Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh said on 13 October 2026, according to Reuters.

Speaking at an Indian Chamber of Commerce event, Minister Singh linked the overseas outreach to the company’s proposed green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, which is expected to produce green ammonia and green methanol. The reported remarks did not announce a German purchase agreement or identify prospective customers, supply volumes or commercial terms.

Moving towards commercial production

“We have to make hydrogen a business,” Singh said signalling a shift in emphasis from demonstration projects towards commercially viable operations.

The search for overseas customers comes as hydrogen developers seek the long-term purchase commitments needed to support large investments.

Andhra Pradesh hub provides the project backdrop

NTPC’s green hydrogen plans centre on Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam, where NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) are jointly developing an integrated hub.

In its January 2025 project announcement, NTPC outlined plans for 20 GW of renewable energy capacity, 1,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes per day of hydrogen derivatives, including green methanol, green urea and sustainable aviation fuel. These figures represent announced development plans, rather than operational production capacity.

The planned hub covers approximately 1,600 acres, with facilities including a green chemical zone, chemical storage terminal, port infrastructure, transmission corridor and desalination plant. NTPC estimated investment associated with the development at approximately ₹1.85 lakh crore. The infrastructure plans place production, storage and export facilities within the same project framework.

A separate development in India–Germany clean energy trade

NTPC’s discussions add another prospective Indian supplier seeking German demand, following a recent contractual development involving AM Green.

On 30 September 2026, Hintco announced that AM Green had won the Asian lot of a German-government-funded H2Global auction, securing a long-term agreement to supply renewable ammonia to Germany. Under that agreement, Hintco will purchase ammonia worth at least €585 million over ten years, with first deliveries expected in 2029 from AM Green’s Kakinada project in Andhra Pradesh.

The two developments are at different commercial stages. AM Green has secured a purchase agreement; NTPC’s reported outreach remains at the discussion stage. Together, they indicate that Indian producers are pursuing German demand through both contracted supply and negotiations with prospective customers. This is an emerging trade pipeline, with NTPC’s participation still dependent on the outcome of its buyer discussions.

India’s hydrogen ambitions depend on demand

The wider policy backdrop is India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved in January 2023 with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore. It targets green hydrogen production capacity of at least five million tonnes annually by 2030 and seeks to develop India as a hub for the production, use and export of hydrogen and its derivatives.

For India–Germany energy cooperation, NTPC’s outreach points to a broader pool of potential Indian suppliers. The next significant milestone would be a disclosed purchase commitment establishing the buyer, product, volumes and delivery schedule. Until then, the development marks an effort to build an export market rather than a concluded supply deal.
