European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected for a second term, securing 401 votes in favor and 284 against in the European Parliament. The vote reaffirms her leadership of the EU’s powerful executive body, with the support coming from a broad coalition of lawmakers. 

 

Outlining Europe’s Path Forward 

In her address to the Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen presented a strategic vision for Europe’s future, emphasizing the importance of prosperity and security amidst ongoing global challenges. 

 

She highlighted the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine, global economic competition, and climate change, asserting, “The next five years will define Europe’s place in the world for the next five decades. It will decide whether we shape our own future or let it be shaped by events or by others.” 

 

Green Deal Commitment and Climate Action

Von der Leyen reiterated her commitment to the EU’s Green Deal, promising not to retreat from the environmental transformation crucial for combating climate change. This pledge was key in securing the support of Green lawmakers alongside centre-right, centre-left, and liberal groups. 

 

Defence and Support for Ukraine

The President pledged unwavering support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, stating that Europe’s liberty is at stake. 

She announced plans to establish a comprehensive “European Defence Union,” focusing on flagship projects in air and cyber defense, reinforcing her background as a former German defense minister. 

 

Global Reactions: Modi and Scholz Congratulate von der Leyen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India extended his congratulations to von der Leyen on her re-election, expressing eagerness to enhance the strategic partnership between India and the European Commission. In a post on X, he wrote, “Congratulations, @vonderleyen, on your re-election as the President of the European Commission. Look forward to working together to strengthen the India-European Commission Strategic Partnership for global good.” 

 

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also congratulated von der Leyen, hailing her re-election as a positive sign of the EU’s resilience. Scholz posted on X, “A clear sign of our ability to act in the European Union, especially in difficult times. Europeans expect us to take Europe forward. Let’s do it!”  In her victory speech, von der Leyen called for unity and strong leadership to navigate Europe’s crises and polarization.
