In a recent interview to NDTV, Germany’s Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, said negotiations for a major submarine deal between India and Germany are at an advanced stage, expressing confidence that the agreement could be finalised soon.

Talks at “far advanced” stage

Speaking to NDTV, the envoy described the negotiations as “far advanced” and conveyed optimism that the agreement with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) would be concluded shortly.

He indicated that the deal could be signed “in the coming weeks,” signalling that both sides are close to finalising one of the most significant defence partnerships between the two countries.

Six advanced submarines under discussion

The proposed agreement involves the construction of six advanced diesel-electric submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, a key capability that allows submarines to remain submerged for longer durations.

According to the envoy, the submarines are expected to be built largely in India through a collaboration between TKMS and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, aligning with India’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing.

Boost to Indo-German defence cooperation

The potential deal is seen as a major milestone in India–Germany defence ties, particularly in the naval domain. It also reflects growing strategic alignment, with Germany emerging as a key partner in India’s efforts to modernise its maritime capabilities.

The development comes amid broader discussions under Project-75(I), a long-pending programme aimed at strengthening India’s submarine fleet and enhancing undersea deterrence capabilities.

Strategic and industrial significance

Beyond defence, the project is expected to deepen industrial cooperation between Indian and German firms, especially in high-end manufacturing, technology transfer, and skill development.

If finalised, the agreement would mark one of the largest defence collaborations between India and Germany, reinforcing the expanding strategic partnership between the two countries.
