Dr Jasper Wieck has assumed charge as Germany’s Ambassador-Designate to India and Bhutan, returning to a country where he previously served as Deputy Head of Mission and which he first visited as a student 35 years ago.

Ambassador-Designate Wieck succeeds Dr Philipp Ackermann at a significant point in the bilateral relationship. India and Germany are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, while cooperation between the two countries continues to expand across trade, investment, defence, technology, sustainability, skilled mobility and education.

A familiar face returns to New Delhi

Introducing himself in a social-media message after arriving in New Delhi, Ambassador-Designate Wieck described his return to India as akin to “coming home”.

He recalled first visiting India as a student 35 years ago and being immediately impressed by the country and its people. He later returned with his wife, Cordula, when he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in New Delhi between 2017 and 2020.

Ambassador-Designate Wieck said the couple retained fond memories of those years and expressed his happiness at returning to India in a new role.

Vision for India–Germany relations

Outlining his priorities for the assignment, Ambassador-Designate Wieck said that, after presenting his credentials, he intends to work as a “matchmaker, enabler and catalyst” to take the India–Germany friendship to a new level.

His message placed particular emphasis on building new connections between the two countries. He pointed to the growing Indian community in Germany and the expanding presence of German investment in India as examples of the increasingly close relationship.

The Ambassador-Designate also highlighted the role of the German Embassy in New Delhi and Germany’s four consulates-general across India in advancing bilateral engagement.

In his official message, Ambassador-Designate Wieck described the India–Germany friendship as having “deep and solid foundations”. He said the two countries had emerged as trusted and dependable partners at a time of rapid global change and expressed his intention to broaden and deepen their strategic partnership.

Extensive experience in defence and foreign policy

Ambassador-Designate Wieck brings extensive experience in diplomacy, security policy and Germany’s engagement with Asia.

Before taking up his new assignment, he served as Political Director at Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defence from 2022 to 2026. Between 2021 and 2022, he was Deputy Director General for South Asia and Indo-Pacific Policy at the Federal Foreign Office. During the same period, he served as the German Federal Government’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

From 2020 to 2021, Ambassador-Designate Wieck was Deputy Director General for East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific at the Federal Foreign Office.

His earlier assignments included serving as Head of the Defence and Security Policy Division at the Federal Foreign Office from 2012 to 2017 and heading the Political Division at Germany’s Permanent Delegation to NATO in Brussels from 2009 to 2012.

He has also served at German diplomatic missions in Moscow and Baku and in different positions in Berlin. Ambassador-Designate Wieck joined the German Foreign Service in 1994.

Bilateral partnership enters its next phase

Ambassador-Designate Wieck begins his assignment as India and Germany seek to advance their strategic partnership amid changing geopolitical and economic conditions.

His previous experience in New Delhi, combined with his recent work in defence, security and Indo-Pacific policy, gives him direct familiarity with several areas now central to the bilateral agenda.

With stronger trade and investment flows, a growing Indian diaspora in Germany and widening institutional cooperation, Ambassador-Designate Wieck has identified his role as one of connecting stakeholders and enabling new partnerships across the two countries.
