Germany has introduced new salary requirements for its EU Blue Card program, increasing the income thresholds for foreign professionals seeking to live and work in the country. The changes, effective from January 1, 2025, reflect the government’s efforts to streamline skilled migration policies while addressing labor market demands.
New Minimum Salary Requirements Announced
The German Federal Government has confirmed that foreign nationals must now meet higher salary benchmarks to qualify for the EU Blue Card. For those with a specific job offer in Germany, the gross annual income requirement has risen to €48,300, a 6.6% increase from the previous year’s threshold of €45,300. This adjustment applies to most applicants outside of designated “bottleneck professions.”
Bottleneck Professions See Adjusted Thresholds
Foreign workers employed in industries experiencing skill shortages—such as IT, STEM, construction, and education—will also face new income criteria. Applicants in these fields must earn a minimum of €43,759.80 annually, up from €41,041.80 in 2024. These professions benefit from special provisions, including the possibility of lower income thresholds, provided the Employment Agency approves the job offer.
However, for young professionals entering the labor market, the salary requirement remains unchanged at €41,041.80, offering a steady pathway to employment in Germany.
Why the EU Blue Card Is Sought After
The EU Blue Card is a popular residency program designed for highly skilled non-EU professionals. It provides various benefits, including:
• Flexibility to change employers without lengthy procedures.
• Pathway to permanent residency in the European Union.
• Family reunification under more favorable conditions.
• Cross-border work opportunities in other EU states for short periods.
Applicants must meet additional eligibility criteria beyond salary requirements, including proof of higher professional qualifications.
Germany’s updated salary thresholds highlight the country’s commitment to attracting global talent while maintaining competitive standards for its skilled workforce.
